Hyatt Regency, Churchill Hotel

Voice Alarm Project

Voice Alarm Specialists t. 01440 730948
Located just two minutes walk from Oxford Street the Hyatt Regency London - The  Churchill is a 5 star hotel offering its guests luxury services and accommodation.   Situated overlooking Portman Square the hotel comprises of nine floors and contains  a restaurant, bar, conference facilities and 434 guest rooms, including 50 suites, a  Presidential suite and a Royal suite. The hotels life safety system incorporates a voice alarm system which, in combination  with loudspeakers installed throughout the building and within all guest rooms, is used for the broadcast of emergency messages to ensure all occupants are effectively and  efficiently evacuated in the event of an emergency.  When originally installed, the voice alarm system was mainly designed to be used as  a non-emergency public address system. In September 2012 the hotel employed the services of International Fire Consultants  Ltd to produce and manage the tender process for the complete re-wire of the voice  alarm system. The scope of the tender was to include the supply and installation of  9,000m of new fully compliant fire rated cable from the voice alarm equipment rack to  over 900 loudspeakers installed throughout the hotel. Professional Sound Consultancy were invited to tender for the works and were  delighted to be awarded the contract in December 2012.  Work at the hotel started immediately. Close co-ordination between the Professional  Sound Consultancy team and the hotel was required to ensure the hotel remained  open to guests throughout the project.  It was agreed that the cable installation would be carried out over a number of phases  and would be limited to one floor at a time during which time the hotel would close  that floor off to their guests. The potential loss of revenue this presented to the hotel  meant that the floors could only be shut off for short periods of time. Meticulous  planning and execution of the works was essential to ensure each phase was started
and completed on time, without disruption to the hotel.   250 additional loudspeakers were also installed within areas of the hotel to ensure sound coverage levels met the  requirements of BS5839-8. Furthermore, the majority of  bedroom ceiling loudspeakers were re-located into the lobby  areas of the room requiring new holes to be cut into the  metal ceiling tiles. Following completion of each phase of work Professional  Sound Consultancy commissioned and tested the newly  installed cables and carried out sound pressure level testing  witnessed by Baldwin Boxall and Ian Odendaal, Technical  Director of the Hyatt Regency London - The Churchill.  Once all cable had been installed the entire voice alarm  system was fully commissioned. This included installation of upgraded amplifiers and batteries within the equipment rack. Thanks to the close working relationship between  Professional Sound Consultancy and the hotel management  team the project was delivered on time and within budget  with no adverse affects to the management of the hotel or its  guests. Professional Sound Consultancy continue to provide annual  service and maintenance and further modifications and  enhancements to the voice alarm system at this prestigious  5-star London hotel.
